It gives me great pleasure and honour to be upstanding before you to be part of your graduation today.
We have two groups of graduating students today, one to further their studies with opportunities on offer in pursuit of a better life in education in some of our higher institutions whilst one group will not, so, how do we assist the unfavoUred group so, their learning and education does not see an end here today at this graduation 2017.
I come from a life where I was denied my rights to a formal education leaving school doing 8th grade at St Pauls Lutheran High School.1978.
EDUCATION AND EDUCATED.
To the continuing group.
Even though it is everyone’s human rights to be educated only some will proceed with greater opportunities whilst some will be left with no option but to disconnect with the education system.
To the continuing, Education does not end in graduation, pretty simple because they will continue schooling at their nominated higher institutions.
Education as I see now is important part in life. It opens your mind and presents you the keys to the doors with opportunities to better your life in an established system or environment. It helps you to learn more about the world and her habitants including people.
Education is the standard, the bar to which you will be measured as an intellectual  and a standard that will be used to qualify you to be accepted into the modern society that we as a nation advancing to. So, it requires that everyone must go through an education system and is formalised or certified by certificate or degree paper at the end of the process.

THE COMMUNITY
When one completes a stage in the process by getting a certificate or degree, it is a personal achievement, however it brings joy and pride to the family and the community. It is common knowledge in PNG the community shows some level of respect for the well-educated person. (In a white man’s system, education is a personal achievement.)
On track with our theme, Education does not end at Graduation, I must reiterate that a certificate or a degree papers are just formalities to signal the end of the education process however, there is no end in education and learning. I will quote the Englishman Isaac Newton, one son who grew up with a mother who left her first marriage to marry her second husband, man who revolutionised the entire world once said education ends the day you die. So, this means we must try to learn every day and explore every opportunity to improve our lives.
Yes, I know everyone has the rights to be educated for many reasons as there is a reward for being well educated which is also a human right, This, sets the stage for a secure future, a high level of income, social status, respectable figure in the community, and in most cases educated people do not choose to be in the condition of poverty, it opens your mind to appreciate life.
My views are that you must be well educated for reasons stated above including many others.
For this reason, we are gathered here today to witness the closing of only one of the stages in the entire education process.
Yes 2017 grade 12 graduands *CONGRATULATIONS*
OWN LIFE STORY
Today I have this opportunity to share with you my own life story which has some connections to our theme. We will at the end of this story work out how meaningful you can contribute to family, community and nation building regardless of where you are placed whether you are presented with the opportunity today to further your education or are made to discontinue.
Okay, we mentioned few reasons about why you should be educated but how about those who won’t have the opportunity.
I want those students who will be unfortunate in securing a place in higher institutions to pay attention to me.
I have never been highly educated myself. I left formal schooling in grade 8 St Pauls Lutheran High School 1978.
Remember I was invited to be your guest in recognition of my hard works and not in the context of being highly educated.
LIFE STORY
Was born and raised in a Christian home, my father being the Pastor of a small Lutheran congregation in Monakam up in the valley of Ambum,
1969 – 1975 attended a Lutheran Primary School away from my home in Kundis. Would take about 3 hours walk one way from my home.
1976 – 1978 did my high school to grade 9 when in August of 1978 I got expelled from school for leading a school strike.
The decision makers for my fate were board of governors from our province being Mark Yapao, Dale Kambu and late Dr. Bishop Wais Waima. The, teachers that influenced my expulsion were Paul Depo , Isac Pyaso and Sapom Kipa when I went against the teachers and no serious crime to warrant such decisions.
From 1978- 1979 worked at a mission farm looking after pigs delivering litters, feeding animals and cleaning the pans at Mukuramanda.
Two years later in 1980 I found myself working for ATA Transport that was birthed out of Christian Leaders Training Collage in Banz Western Highlands Province.
Some ten years later I decided I could do something on my own and the rest is history to this period. Today the Mapai Group employees more than 400 PNGs and 7 expatriates, 4 branches in PNG, an office in NZ, a Logistic Business in Brisbane Australia.
WHAT DROVE ME
Since I did not have a certificate or degree to secure me a well-paid job, I laid my hands on everything I possibly could to learn and I have never stopped until I have mastered my skills. (no teachers, no classroom) You know it is a dirty job and low-profile job, but it did not deter me in any way. Whatever other people may have thought or said at the back of me, back then, it was their problem. For me I was curious to find a path way for my survival, so with a positive mindset every day, I kept on working from morning till dawn/afternoon. Even today I have never stopped working and learning. Over the years learning and working as become a character or part of me and I am a testament of the great Isaac Newton saying. Education or Learning never stops until you die.
ADVANTAGED PERSON
One observation is a person with greater paper in their possession seems to think they have reached the ultimatum in education resorting into a comfort zone becoming complacent and nothing more to do.
DISADVANTAGED PERSON
On the other end the one who is disadvantaged in their rights to be educated are working extra harder and don’t stop thinking and working for the entire life. In the process, creates lot of avenues to generate income for themselves and even create opportunities for others. (exactly what I am doing).
The belief that I am unqualified to earn a decent living provoked (hatim bel) me from day one to set my foot down and work hard to create opportunities for myself to earn a living and I am telling you I am still working hard and learning to this day.
Also in my observation it is only natural for the disadvantaged to physically work harder and does not stop thinking outside the box . This is because their only way of survival is through sheere hard work and creativity. Just immagine these people who may believe such things and are not ashamed to ignore totally all the patient findings of thinking mind through all the centuries since the Bible was written. And it is these ignorant people ,the most uneducated, the most unimaginitive, the most unthinking, among us who would make guiders and the leaders of us all who would force their feeble and childish beliefs on the educated who would invade ourlives and homes.
History also shown around the world today of less educated people who have gone to demonstrate leadership in all aspects of life. Americas greatest inventor Thomas Edison incandescence light bulb, lighting up homes in the world, Bill Gates Microsoft computer. These are world changers we are talking about they are uneducated, or semi educated individuals.
You invited me here because you see my works and not my education level.
I am experiencing a few of these with the degrees fronting up at our office steps only to be told we are unable to assist in this instance and they go away unhappy. The positions we may have are all occupied by many who are all educated to the same levels.
It is not the pieces of papers, rather it is the difference you can make with the documents. You must go beyond degrees to realise noticeable changes in life. Remain tall amongst the crowd for the world to see.
DISADVANTAGED ONES/DISCONTINUING
Education does not teach you how to be logical from scrap. It builds on those skills we already possess.
Fact of the matter is, you can balance equality on two scales, simply because it is not the knowledge the continuing once will obtain rather it is the refinement you bring to your character with it that bring about the higher thinking and broader perspective that are supposed to define those with huge degrees and a long list of qualifications.
It is more simplicity that makes the uneducated more effective than the educated. Uneducated men argue from common knowledge and draw obvious conclusions.
It is not fair to undermine the level of intelligence or wisdom of an uneducated person. Due to various socio-economic reasons such poverty, political instability, cast etc., some smart people are deprived of receiving a good education. However, they can be intellectuals with a very high wisdom and they may be able to guide many educated people in the right path.
MESSAGE.
There is track records before us that the disadvantaged have turned out to be leaders in most areas of life where the educated and systematic people are working extra hard to remain on track with compliance of established systems.
I remind all continuing students to become more innovative in your classrooms rather than getting into a situation you are built to operate as programmed devise.
It is only natural for the unflavored ones to work harder as it isn’t written, hence they create their own stories.
The world needs educated people with the right attitude and remember there is never an ending opportunity for the disadvantaged. You need both on the balance for the equation to produce honest and true results.
Be thankful to God in whatever you do under all circumstances. It is the unity of both continuing and discontinuing students that are needed to build a strong nation PNG.
I on behalf of my family and the management and staff of Mapai wish you all Gods Blessings in abundance and have a joyful Christmas celebration this season.
God be with you and your family until the end of the age.
Thanks
Jacob Luke
